چکیده

While it used to be satisfactory that sea r ch applications used to look up simple keywords in the past, nowadays a sea rch engine is increasingly expected to be able performing sema ntic sea rch as well. This leads to an intensified research on ontologies supporting these applications. Users might only have a vague idea of the exact keywords to the content they seek, especially when it comes to technical or subject-specific topics and professional expertise is needed. A domain-specific ontology can support the user suggesting differentiated or alternative keywords for his query. Nevertheless, building an ontology containing expert knowledge is effortful and domain experts normally do not have sufficient skills how to build an ontology. Therefore, it is desirable to make an ontology automatically build and extend itself from alrea dy ava ilable information, such as wiki-texts. We developed a text mining component which automatically derives an ontology from collaborative texts written by scientific experts. Our component is used in a sea rch application of an informa tion system on energy research.

IkeWiki: A User-Friendly Semantic Wiki

This article describes the architecture and design principles of IkeWiki, a Semantic Wiki we developed at Salzburg Research. Outstanding features of IkeWiki are its support for collaborative knowledge engineering, its ease of use, its support for different levels of formalisation ranging from informal texts to formal ontologies, and its sophisticated, interactive user interface.

Automatic Retrieval of Definitions in Texts, in Accordance with a General Linguistic Ontology

A semantics of definition category and its sub-categories used in texts, organized in a semantic map, requires a more complex structuring of the domain underlying the meaning representations than is commonly assumed. This paper proposes a three-layer ontology in which the notion of definition takes part and indicates how it can be used in Information Retrieval. The first part describes an autom...

Combining Terms and Named Entities for Modeling Domain Ontologies from Texts

Building ontologies from plain texts is still a research issue. This process cannot be fully automated but natural language processing and methodological guidelines can help the knowledge engineer’s task. In this paper we present terminae and show through the analysis of three different experiments on policy documents how the initial terminological approach can be guided by taking named entitie...

Semantic Web: Theory and Applications J.UCS Special Issue

It comprises eight articles addressing theoretical as well as application oriented aspects of the Semantic Web. The first three papers pick up theoretical aspects of Semantic Web, namely RDF, ontology evaluation and ontology development. The first article picks up the problem of query languages for RDF which however do not support fuzzy queries. The authors introduce a new method that transform...

Incremental Design of Ontologies - A Model Transformation-based Approach

This paper focuses on Model Driven Engineering (MDE) techniques to build ontology incrementally. The global building process consists of building ontologies from texts through a stepwise approach. Our approach consists of modeling each step independently and defining a mapping model to express relationships between these steps. Results of this work are applied in the ANR DAFOE project, which ai...
